Depuis que la norme internationale ISO 14001, qui attribue des certifications aux entreprises qui respectent l'environnement, est en vigueur, le gouvernement chinois s'est fortement impliqué dans son application. Cet engagement a eu des effets positifs car il a fait connaître la norme qui a été intégrée dans la politique de l'environnement, mais ce faisant il risque de décrédibiliser le système de certification.
