Une enquête effectuée dans le Delaware lors de la Guerre du Golfe de 1991 auprès de la population montre que le soutien à la guerre n'a pas été aussi massif que les médias l'ont rapporté : 53% des réponses faisaient état de positions de neutralité, de désaccord ou de fort désaccord et 6,6% seulement relevaient du fort soutien. Cela confirme la théorie de la spirale du silence et la manipulation de l'opinion publique par la télévision.
