Si l'Union soviétique a disparu, l'armée existe toujours. Elle est organisée selon les principes particuliers du communisme soviétique et en fonction de la défense de l'Union . Il est donc politiquement et matériellement impossible de maintenir son intégrité. Cependant, les évolutions divergentes des nouveaux Etats de l'Est, leurs relations, leurs aspirations nationalistes et démocratiques rendent d'autant plus incertain le futur statut de la force armée soviétique.
